Collections on your credit report

A collection can hurt your score for years. Some are true. Some are not: the wrong balance, a debt that isn't yours, the same debt twice, or wrong dates.

What we can dispute

  • Debts that aren't yours or that you already paid
  • Wrong balance, dates or status
  • The same debt reported twice (original creditor + collector)
  • Debts the collector can't validate

What no one can do

A true collection that can be proven can stay up to 7 years from when you first fell behind. If someone promises to remove true collections, they are not being honest.

Your rights

You can ask a debt collector to prove the debt (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act). You can dispute wrong information with the bureaus for free (Fair Credit Reporting Act).

You can dispute for free on your own. If you'd like help, we're here.
